Overview

8-week internship @ NewDealDesign
NewDealDesign is a strategic technology design agency based in San Francisco. They have been building brilliant brands, systems, products, and experiences for over 20 years.

As an experience design intern, I collaborated with industrial designers and the marketing team to research and design better product experiences.
My responsibilities

✦ User research and insights analysis
‍
Thought holistically to create user experiences for technology products. Brainstormed with peers and used Figma to design interactions across the entire user journey.

✦ Designing experiences that span the user journey

Collaborated with the marketing team to conduct competitive analysis, literature reviews, interviews, and desktop research, generating insights for clients UberFreight.

✦ Building, testing, and presenting prototypes
‍
Rapidly built physical and digital prototypes, including videos for presentations and iterations. Created sound and animations to further enhance the experience.

What I learned

Be scrappy and bold
Rapid prototyping and iterations give us more creative space. Through daily critiques and presenting work, I learned to better give and receive feedback and iterate quickly. Sometimes good design requires taking risks.
Let your visual work speak for you

We use dedicated work sessions that bring designers together to brainstorm and sketch ideas. In these two months, I learned to communicate through visual language rather than words and added more precision to my visual storytelling.
Collaborating across teams
Working with industrial designers is very similar to working with software engineers. As experience designers, we have to constantly defend our designs and try our best to overcome technical constraints.

Aside from work

I documented my daily work reflections using the structure - keep, fix, and try! I cooked an 8-course dinner for my wonderful XD team to say thanks on my last-day!
